Blog: Kristian Watches

kristian_100x100blog-iconKristian Haagen loves watches. So much that he can't stop talking about them. He has been a timegeek since he was ten years old. Never good at playing soccer he turned to the windows of his local watch maker and fell in love with the horological industry. He has written two books on watches, has published hundreds of watch related articles in International magazines and works as watch estimater for an auction house.

How many people want the same car as their neighboor? Personally I know of nobody. I do however know people who would like the same brand of car, however different model. Also bigger, faster and something that signals that you earn 100 Euro more an hour than him.

Honouring McQueen. With a watch he never wore

Funny how the Rolex Explorer II ref. 1655 "Freccione" is sometimes called Steve McQueen. Eventhough the legendary Mr Cool never wore this reference. He wore a Rolex Submariner, yes. He wore a Heuer Monaco during the filming of Le Mans, yes. But he did not wear a Rolex Explorer II in Towering Inferno. This is a bad case of repeating nonsense that has stuck like slow working glue. And in the name of slow working glue and urban myths I present you these pictures I made to honour Mr. Cool.

The honesty of the sun.

Oh, what a wonderful day it was. The sun was all out, bright and reminding us how great life is when it does not rain. On days like this it even feels like the bank manager does not exist, the house is all paid for and that your sorrows are long gone. And this is just what happens once the sun shines all day (ask the Greek. They know.)

What happened to dignity?

Visited the Bamford & Sons website recently and almost lost my not-even-hot-anymore latte into the keyboard when I saw the black editions of the Patek Philippe Nautilus and Aquanaut. What in the Helen of Troy were they thinking when they decided to destroy perfect looking watches. And even make them look cheap?

Playing with straps

It was pouring down rain all weekend here in DanishLand and while dreaming of summer I took out my stash of NATO soft straps and took some pictures of my Rolex Explorer II ref. 1655 aka Freccione attached to some of them.

My favorite of them all is the green Victorinox strap made of Japanese webbing. It contains more cotton than nylon, meaning it is not only very pleasant to wear. It also does not leave any marks on the case back, which nylon straps tend to do. Unfortunately these straps are dedicated the Victorinox Original watches and I have no clue where to buy them.

It was time to let these two beauties leave the Haagen collection. But why? They are stunning and perfect reps of the early days of Panerai when Vendome took over the wheel of the otherwise sinking ship and steered her into safe harbours. My policy is that I do not have any safe queens and that all my watches should be worn. If not then it is time to leave and entertain other wrists.

Another lovely day in the auction business

This is another great example of the benefits of working for an auction house. You get pieces like this incredible handsome ref. 1665 Double Red Sea-Dweller in from first owner. Complete with original certificate from a Danish Rolex retailer. Unfortunately I cannot afford to bid on the watch myself as I am certain it will get some solid bids from around the world. But at least I got to handle it and feel the power of precious vintage sports Rolex. Again.

You like Oysters?

Well, then you will probably like this one. A rare and very early ref. 4467 from 1945 – the birth year of the DateJust! An incredible find, not only because it is from 1945, but also because it is of 18 ct. gold and has a nice size of 36 mm AND has the roulette date wheel that changes from black to red. I know the dial is a later service dial and also in poor condition. But you should be able to find an original dial if you are patient and have money in your pockets to spend.

Rubberized

I am strangely attracted to these rubber coated Corum Admiral's Cup Challenge 44 Chrono. This year these attractive models are offered in a bright orange and olive green of which the orange is limited to 120 pieces and the green to only 70. I am honestly surprised about the low production numbers as I see these models as quite interesting in a Royal Oak Offshore kind of way. The Admiral's Cup collection clearly is the sporty line-up at Corum and why not Swatch up that collection and offer way more colours and a regular unlimited production?

Visiting Zenith at Basel World this year was quite the treat. One great looking watch after the other. Not least the stunning Pilot DoubleMatic. Already a stunner in steel, this limited edition of rosegold is even more tempting than the lighter sibling. Here´s a little tech on the 250-pieces Midas wonder:
