The special award for technical excellence goes to the Zeitwerk Minute Repeater seen here in action

This week we present you with the winners of the 0024 European Watch of the Year awards. During jury meetings of the 16th edition of the competition we evaluated more than 100 submissions, divided into six categories – four price categories for men’s watches and two price categories for women’s watches.

The judges also took the opportunity to present a special award for technical excellence. And the award went to Glashütte.

Technical Excellence Award: A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Minute Repeater

Judges’ substantiation: “Only Lange could have built this watch. This is the ultimate Zeitwerk watch with its mechanical digital display that is especially suited to decimal style of chime. The platinum case is noble and so is the minute repeater system: almost over-engineered and quirky because of its decimal system to sound the time. Normaly a minute repeater is a very delicate piece of equipment, but this Lange Zeitwerk Minute Repeater is outfitted with the foolproof 771-component Caliber L043.5. The watch is water-resistant because it uses a complex pusher system to activate the strike in place of a traditional slide. Also remarkable is the fact that the complicated movement has just one barrel. The presence of the constant force energy already inherent to the Zeitwerk’s movement, made it possible to realise 36 hours of power reserve with just one spring barrel. This watch is a ground-breaking technical masterpiece.”
